Once stable, Total Artificial Heart patients are listed UNOS Status 1A and moved to the top of the transplant list until a matching donor heart becomes available.

Donor Hearts in Short Supply

Despite growing demand, the supply of donor hearts has remained flat for the last 20 years. Only about 2,200 donor hearts become available each year in the U.S.

According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation
Network (OPTN^)**:

• 48% of people listed for a donor heart have been waiting for more than a year
• 13% have been waiting for 5+ years
• 16% died or became too sick for transplant while waiting for a donor
  heart in 2008
