Backpack Offers Freedom to Teen with Total Artificial Heart

Texas Children’s Hospital

Aug. 31, 2011 - On the 16th floor of Texas Children's Hospital (TCH), you can hear the mechanical "drumbeat" of a worthy young life rescued from the brink. Jordan Merecka, by necessity, traded a God-given heart that no longer worked for a man-made replacement that would. "It wasn't the way I intended to get famous, but I'll take it," the 18-year-old said with a smile on his face. TCH surgeons implanted the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart in May and ever since, Jordan’s health has improved in astonishing fashion.
