Iowa Artificial Heart Transplant First of Its Kind
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
July 12, 2011 - Velcro and plastic are keeping an eastern Iowa man alive. Last week doctors from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics performed the artificial heart transplant so the patient will be able to go home with a portable pump* while he waits for a matching donor heart.
The procedure is the first in the state. During a traditional transplant, patients would have to stay in the hospital while waiting for a human heart. But Dr. James Davis said that's all changed.
