When Greg Michels, 40, was first diagnosed with heart failure two decades ago, he was told he only had a few years to live. His condition slowly worsened until December 2008, when he died twice and had to be resuscitated. Then, on April 29, 2009, Michels had to be flown by air ambulance from his hometown of Billings, Montana, to Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Two days later, he was implanted with the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart.
