Marvin J. Slepian, M.D.
Co-Founder, Chairman, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer
Marvin J. Slepian, M.D., is Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), Director of Interventional
Cardiology, and Director of the Tissue Engineering Lab at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Slepian completed his Internal Medicine training at NYU-Bellevue in New York
where he was a Resident and Chief Resident in Medicine. He completed his
Cardiology training at Johns Hopkins where he was a Clinical and Research Fellow.
He completed a second fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the Cleveland
Clinic. Dr. Slepian has conducted extensive research, development and pre-clinical
investigation of novel cardiovascular therapeutic methods and devices, and is
the holder of more than 25 issued and 41 filed patents. He is an expert in polymeric
biomaterials and local drug delivery.
Dr. Slepian has founded numerous medical device companies,
including Focal (NASDAQ-traded, acquired by Genzyme), Endotex, Angiotrax and Hansen
Medical, and has served as acting CEO and Board Member of several medical device
startups. He earned his AB in Biochemical Sciences and Science in Human Affairs
from Princeton University, and his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati, College
of Medicine, and has received additional post-doctoral training at MIT and Washington
University.

Rodger G. Ford
President and Chief Executive Officer
Rodger G. Ford, is the co-founder of Anthem Equity Group,
Inc., a Tucson real estate and business development
company. Mr. Ford holds a B.S. degree in Accounting
from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the
University of Arizona.
Mr. Ford founded AlphaGraphics Printshops of the Future
in 1970 and grew AlphaGraphics Printshops of the Future to 400 locations in 20
countries by 1998. AlphaGraphics was the first franchisor in the world to open
a location in the Soviet Union (Moscow) and the first franchisor in the world
to open a location in China (Beijing). Mr. Ford was Quick Printing Man of the
Year in 1985, Arizona SBA Entrepreneur of the Year in 1986 (AlphaGraphics), and
Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2000 (PETsHOTEL).

Richard G. Smith, MSEE, CCE
Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer
Richard G. Smith has been involved in the biomedical engineering field for 31 years, including 23 years exclusively with circulatory support devices. He directs the Artificial Heart Program at University Medical Center in Tucson, the most experienced artificial heart center in the world. Mr. Smith has overseen more than 18,000 patient days (50 years) with 20 different support systems in more than 300 patients. He has been a principal scientist at SynCardia from its early stages, writing the FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE), conducting the clinical study and training centers around the world. He is co-author of more than 120 publications in the medical device field and has consulted for many medical device companies. Mr. Smith holds a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a certified clinical engineer.

J. David Mackstaller
VP, Sales and Marketing
J. David Mackstaller, is the co-founder of Anthem Equity Group, Inc., a Tucson real estate
and business development company founded in 1991. Mr. Mackstaller holds a B.A.
degree in Economics from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctorate, Cum
Laude, from the University of Michigan Law School. Mr. Mackstaller founded the
Schomac Group, Inc. and National Self Storage.
Schomac Group owned and developed over 4,000 apartment
units and various commercial properties, including the Tucson Automall. National
Self Storage grew to a 90 facility chain which had locations from Portland, Oregon
to Boca Raton, Florida. Mr. Mackstaller was the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of
the Year in 2000 (PETsHOTEL).

Mike Gaul
Chief Operating Officer
Michael A. Gaul graduated from Delaware Valley College in 1976 with a BS degree in Business Administration and received his MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1986. He has more than 30 years of experience in Manufacturing, Operations and General Management in the Medical Device, Public Safety, OEM Capital Equipment and Process Control Instrumentation Industries.
Mr. Gaul was previously VP Operations for Ventana Medical Systems, Tucson, AZ. Prior to joining Ventana Medical, Mr. Gaul held several senior executive positions with Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. (RVSI), a manufacturer of capital equipment for the semiconductor industry. Mr. Gaul has extensive training in lean manufacturing, quality, process and productivity improvements as well as international experience in Asia and Europe. |

Cary Marcot
VP, Quality and Regulatory Affairs
Carole E. Marcot, Esq. is Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs for
SynCardia, responsible for quality engineering, regulatory compliance, domestic
and international regulatory affairs, quality systems and clinical affairs.
Ms. Marcot joined SynCardia from Ventana Medical Systems,
Inc., a manufacturer of in vitro diagnostic products, where she served as Vice
President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Systems. Prior to Ventana, she
held similar positions with Impulse Dynamics, Inc., manufacturer of innovative
implantable devices for heart failure, and CardioGenesis, Inc., manufacturer of
unique devices for coronary artery disease. Her previous experience includes
positions with Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Tokos Medical Corporation and Intermedics,
Inc. She has taught Food, Drug and Cosmetic Law as an Adjunct Professor
and served as founder and corporate secretary of a privately held company specializing
in clinical trials.
Ms. Marcot received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology
from the College of St. Elizabeth and an MBA from the University of California,
Irvine. She holds a JD from Western State University College of Law and
is an active member of the California State Bar.

Dena Richter
Chief Financial Officer
Dena L. Richter graduated from Minnesota State
University – Moorhead, Magna Cum Laude,
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting
and received a Juris Doctorate from the University
of Minnesota Law School.
Ms. Richter joined
SynCardia in 2004. She has over 12 years senior
management experience in banking, human resources,
information systems and corporate accounting functions
in various industries including; construction,
automotive and FDA regulated food processing.
