Pneumatic Drivers Power the Total Artificial Heart

Pneumatic drivers have powered the Total Artificial Heart for close to 30 years. Because of its unique design, the Total Artificial Heart doesn’t require sensors, motors or electronics of any type inside the body. All electronics for the Total Artificial Heart are safely located outside the body in the pneumatic driver. There is never a need to re-operate to repair faulty electronics.

Implant and Discharge Drivers

SynCardia implant drivers support patients from implant of the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart until their condition stabilizes. In Europe, stable patients are then switched to a portable driver and discharged from the hospital.

The new, wearable Freedom® driver system has received the CE Mark for use in Europe. SynCardia is also conducting FDA-approved Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical study of the Freedom driver in the U.S.

*The SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart was formerly known as the
SynCardia temporary CardioWest™ Total Artificial Heart.
