Characteristics: CardioWest TAH-t

Occupies space of diseased heart
Replaces diseased heart
Implanted  into heart failure patients who have a BSA of 1.7 m2 or greater
Contains 2 ventricles and 4 artificial valves
Presently indicated for use as a bridge-to-transplant – a complete circulatory support system for patients with irreversible biventricular heart failure
Position of ventricles is adjustable in chest
No surgical pocket required
Stroke volume is 70 ml
Weighs 160 grams
Diameter of Inflow Medtronic- Hall valve is 27 mm
Diameter of Outflow Medtronic-Hall valve is 25 mm
Blood flow path is the same as the normal heart
Distance blood travels from the inflow to the ventricle is <2 cm
Distance of the blood path from inflow to outflow is < 20cm.  (shortest distance of any mechanical device, decreasing the risk of thromboembolitic events)
Seamless blood diaphragm
Four flexible polyurethane diaphragms. (blood, 2 intermediate and air diaphragms)
Cardiac output up to 9.5 L/min
