Drivers Power the Total Artificial Heart

Pneumatic drivers have powered the Total Artificial Heart with precisely calibrated pulses of air and vacuum for 30 years.

Because of its unique design, the Total Artificial Heart doesn’t require sensors, motors or electronics of any type inside the body. All electronics for the Total Artificial Heart are safely located outside the body in the external driver. There is never a need to re-operate to repair electronics.

In-Hospital and At Home

The state-of-the-art Companion 2 (C2) hospital driver powers the Total Artificial Heart from implant until the patient’s condition becomes stable. Eligible patients are then switched to the smaller, wearable Freedom® portable driver, which provides the patient with greater mobility. Patients who meet discharge criteria can then leave the hospital to wait for a matching donor heart at home and in their communities.

The Freedom portable driver is FDA approved in the U.S. (June 26, 2014), CE approved for use in Europe and Health Canada approed
