The Freedom portable driver is the world's first wearable, portable power supply for the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart. For more than five years, it has been supporting hundreds of patients.
When patients become clinically stable, they can be switched from the C2 hospital driver to the Freedom portable driver, which provides the patient with significant mobility. Patients who meet discharge criteria can then leave the hospital to wait for matching donor hearts at home.
Light and Wearable
Weighing 13.5 pounds (approx. 6 kg), the Freedom portable driver can be worn by the patient in the backpack or shoulder bag, or wheeled on a small cart.
The Freedom portable driver is powered by two lithium-ion batteries that are recharged using either a standard electrical outlet or a 12 V power outlet. This allows patients to recharge their batteries while traveling and at night while they are sleeping. The batteries provide power to the motors that move the pneumatic pistons. The pistons help create the precisely calibrated pulses of air that power the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart.
Benefits of Discharge
Recovery at home greatly improves the patient’s quality of life, which positively influences their physical, mental and emotional health. The Freedom portable driver helps patients get into better shape for their donor heart transplants. Discharge also eliminates most in-hospital costs for this portion of patient care.
Service by Replacement
SynCardia manufactures and services the Freedom portable driver. No on-site repair or inventory of parts is required by the hospital. Drivers are delivered and returned via express delivery service.
