Randy Shepherd

“A burning desire” to walk the 4.2-mile Pat’s Run that honors slain soldier Pat Tillman put Randy Shepherd in the history books of the annual event. He is the first person without a human heart to ever enter and complete the event that drew more than 30,000 participants.

Randy has been without a human heart since June 20, 2013, when he received the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart to replace his own heart ravaged by rheumatic fever.

He was able to walk in Pat’s Run because of the Freedom® portable driver, the 13.5-pound driver that powers the SynCardia Heart. Randy wears it in a backpack and took it with him as he walked the course with his wife, Tiffany, and Steve Langford, SynCardia director of clinical support.
