Randy Shepherd became the first person without a human heart to enter and complete the 4.2-mile Pat’s Run, an annual run and walk event to honor slain soldier Pat Tillman. Randy is alive with a SynCardia Total Artificial Heart, the world’s first and only FDA, Health Canada and CE (Europe) approved Total Artificial Heart. The SynCardia Heart is currently approved as a bridge to transplant for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure affecting both sides of the heart (biventricular failure). It’s powered by the Freedom® portable driver. Weighing 13.5 pounds, it allows clinically stable patients to be discharged from the hospital to live at home and their communities while waiting for a matching donor heart.
