Companion 2 driver system

The state-of-the-art Companion 2 (C2) Driver provides pneumatic power to the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart (TAH) from implant through patient recovery in the hospital. The C2 Driver monitors the SynCardia TAH without the use of electrical connections inside the patient. Once the patient is clinically stable, they can be switched to the smaller, lighter Freedom Portable Driver.

Features & Benefits

Using either external or compressor-generated air, the C2 Driver provides pneumatic, pulsatile pressure to the 70cc or 50cc SynCardia TAH through  drivelines that connect to the SynCardia TAH cannula. The driver also supplies independent, adjustable vacuum and pressure to the left and right ventricles, allowing performance to be customized to each patient’s needs. During use, the C2 Driver is docked in either the Hospital Cart or the Caddy for easy transportation and charging.

Regulatory Approvals

C2 Hospital Cart

For the OR and initial stages of patient recovery, the C2 Driver is docked in the Hospital Cart, which features a large touch screen display, sturdy support handles and locking casters to provide robust, reliable support for patient ambulation following implant.

C2 Caddy

Once the patient is out of bed and ambulatory, the C2 Driver can be docked in the smaller Caddy to provide greater mobility inside the hospital and on hospital grounds, making it easier for patients to walk, exercise and rebuild their strength.

User-Friendly Touch Screen

The C2 System user interfaces feature two full-color LCD touch screens: one on the Hospital Cart and one on the C2 Driver. Beat rate, dynamic fill volumes, calculated outputs and hourly average cardiac outputs are displayed on a beat-to-beat basis. Adjustable pumping parameters, pressure and flow waveforms and cardiac output trends are also provided on the display.

Three operating modes for clinicians

OR Mode

Allows adjustment of alarm limits, input of patient data and rapid adjustment of parameters without the distraction of audible alarms.

ICU Mode

When accessing driver adjustable parameters and settings, provides an additional safeguard to prevent unauthorized changes.

Ambulatory Mode

No pumping parameter changes are permitted. Graphics and settings can be minimized so that the screen is darkened when the patient is sleeping.
